The Zodiac Signs

What Is the Zodiac?

The word “zodiac” derives from the Greek zoidiakos kyklos, meaning “circle of little animals.” It refers to a band of the sky extending approximately 8 degrees on either side of the ecliptic — the apparent path the Sun traces across the sky over the course of a year. This band is divided into twelve equal segments of 30 degrees, each named after the constellation that historically occupied that region.

Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, which is aligned to the seasons. The first sign, Aries, begins at the vernal (spring) equinox. Because of a phenomenon called the precession of the equinoxes — a slow wobble of the Earth's axis over a ~26,000-year cycle — the tropical zodiac signs have gradually shifted away from the constellations they were originally named after.

Vedic (Hindu) astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, which remains aligned to the fixed stars. This means there is currently a difference of approximately 24 degrees between the two systems, so your Sun sign may differ between Western and Vedic astrology.

The Four Elements

Each zodiac sign is associated with one of the four classical elements, which describe fundamental temperaments and modes of energy:

🔥 Fire — Aries, Leo, Sagittarius

Passionate, dynamic, and assertive. Fire signs are action-oriented, enthusiastic, and driven by inspiration. They initiate and energize.

🌍 Earth — Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn

Practical, grounded, and reliable. Earth signs are concerned with the material world, stability, and tangible results. They build and sustain.

💨 Air — Gemini, Libra, Aquarius

Intellectual, communicative, and social. Air signs are oriented toward ideas, relationships, and the exchange of information. They connect and conceptualize.

💧 Water — Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces

Emotional, intuitive, and deep. Water signs are attuned to feelings, unconscious currents, and the inner world. They feel and transform.

The Three Modalities

The modality (also called quality) describes how a sign expresses its energy and relates to change. Each modality contains one sign from each element, creating four groups of three:

Cardinal — Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn

Cardinal signs initiate and lead. They mark the beginning of each season (equinoxes and solstices) and are associated with taking action, starting new projects, and driving change. They are the “starters” of the zodiac.

Fixed — Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius

Fixed signs stabilize and sustain. They fall in the middle of each season and are associated with perseverance, determination, and resistance to change. They are the “maintainers” of the zodiac.

Mutable — Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces

Mutable signs adapt and transform. They fall at the end of each season, transitioning into the next, and are associated with flexibility, resourcefulness, and openness to change. They are the “adapters” of the zodiac.

Polarity

The twelve signs alternate between two polarities — sometimes called positive/negative or masculine/feminine — which describe whether a sign's energy is directed outward or inward:

Positive (Yang / Masculine)

Aries, Gemini, Leo, Libra, Sagittarius, Aquarius (all Fire and Air signs). Outwardly directed, active, and expressive energy.

Negative (Yin / Feminine)

Taurus, Cancer, Virgo, Scorpio, Capricorn, Pisces (all Earth and Water signs). Inwardly directed, receptive, and reflective energy.
